Importance of Selecting a Primary Care Physician

A Primary Care Physician (PCP) is one who practices any of the following specialties: Internal Medicine, Family Practice (General Practice), Pediatrics or Obstetrics and Gynecology. The PCP’s responsibilities for patients include: evaluating your needs, recommending and arranging the services you need, and facilitating communication and information exchange among the different physicians that may be treating you.

You are encouraged, but not required, to choose a PCP who coordinates all of your care. You have the right to select a PCP of your choice and if you are dissatisfied for any reason with the PCP initially chosen, you should choose another available PCP. Even though you may choose to see a another provider at any time, it is encouraged to use your PCP whenever possible because having a health care provider who knows you well is the best way to keep you healthy.

Your PCP can assist you in the management of all your health care needs and you should contact him or her whenever you require care. Be sure to call your PCP’s office in advance to schedule an appointment for care.
