What expired ACA premium tax credits mean for your 2027 health coverage
The enhanced premium tax credits under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) expired the end of 2025. While the enhanced premium tax credits expired at the end of 2025, you and your family may still qualify for a premium tax credit subsidy to help you pay for your health plan's monthly premiums.
Sanford Health Plan is here to answer your questions, keep you informed and help you find coverage that best fits your individual and family health plan needs in South Dakota and North Dakota.
What were enhanced premium tax credits?
Enhanced premium tax credits, also called enhanced subsidies, provided additional financial assistance beyond the standard ACA premium tax credits. These temporary credits expanded eligibility and increased subsidy amounts for many individuals and families, which allowed for increased savings. They expired at the end of 2025 and are no longer available.
What are premium tax credits (PTCs)?
Premium tax credits are federal subsidies that help lower the monthly cost of health insurance purchased through the Health Insurance Marketplace. The financial assistance you may receive is based on several factors, including:
- Family size
- Household income
- Age of household members
- Cost of coverage in your area
Generally, the lower your income, the higher the premium tax credit you may qualify for.
