Changes Coming to Prior Authorization Submission Process

Sanford Health Plan is shifting away from accepting faxed prior authorization requests. Instead, to offer a more consistent and timely provider experience, all prior authorizations will need to route through the provider portal starting Oct. 1, 2025. 

Here’s what you need to know: 

  • Beginning Oct. 1, 2025, all prior authorization requests will route through the provider portal. This will allow us to offer a more consistent provider experience – and a faster processing time – by facilitating direct communication between providers and health plan staff to resolve questions.
  • Additional functionality will be coming in the near future called Epic Unified Authorizations and will include real-time feedback on codes and services requiring prior authorization. 
  • The following exceptions will remain in place for faxed requests:
    • Urgent/emergent situations
    • Technical issues with the portal
    • Pre-approval from the provider relations team
